Phew nearly there my final post today is the amazing Adidas Stella McCartney Fitness gear I am wearing. I have a major infatuation with her gear and would own every piece every season if my budget allowed! It’s adidas so the technology behind the gear is exceptional and the Stella Style is one of the reasons I started this blog so we can all stay stylish and active to live life to the full.
I am wearing the gorgeous:
I leave you with a story from long time friend Nikki that I hope you will all love:
Hi, I’m Nikki! No not that Nikki, not that one either, and certainly not that one! Just Nikki, from lil old New Zealand who over the last two years has lost 103 pounds or 7 half stone, or for the metrically minded 47kg. From simply…..hmm too soon, can’t give it away that early!
Let’s start with why.
I had just celebrated my 31st Birthday with some of my best friends; Apricot Chicken Pizza, Lemon Meringue Pie, Tim Tams and my ultimate bff Fish n Chips! Seriously, these were some of my closest friends – I mean hey, you can’t maintain 132kg at 31years old without some serious companions. But, as with every year we age, we naturally start to review where were at with things in our life; regrets, dreams, new house, babies the list goes on. And actually, I was happy with most things in my life, great job – TICK, awesome family – TICK, house – TICK, size 24 – TICK; wait, what?!
This is my story, the portion controlled version.
I was 31 years old, 132kg and size 24. For my height, I was morbidly obese. I secretly was a mess, inside and out, and never even knew it. Yes I did, but I tried really hard not to acknowledge it. Our minds are so powerful that for a long time I had convinced myself that this was it, “Nikki your overweight, but this is your identity and you’re a big happy girl, no change required”. But my mind was my intervention. My sugar laden sedentary lifestyle was nothing to be proud about, and for me the epiphany or self-realisation, nothing I could be proud to speak about with my children or other women. At 31 I was embarrassed about what I had become, and what example I was setting for other women in my family. Think couch potato plus sugar treats, times that by seven, you get an idea of the life I was leading. I started to think about my health and legacy, what did I want future Nikki’s to be proud about me for? What photos and activities would they see? What example was I setting for my son and partner? I inspired myself to make a change on behalf of my future.
Losing weight is hard. It takes guts, conscious focus and determination. But it’s been rewarding, enjoyable and empowering. Success breeds success. Seeing my body transform by taking control of my nutrition and fitness has brought me a new sense of confidence and pride. Pride in learning that this is my body, and I love and cherish it, so I will fuel it with healthy organic food that nourishes it.
The day after my birthday I set myself a challenge, no refined sugar for one day. Eat anything Nikki; just make sure there’s no refined sugar. Yes, passed day 1 with flying colours. Next challenge; go a week without refined sugar and walk for fifteen minutes a day. Yes A+. I set small goals and as I achieved each one I changed up the challenge. The shock to my system of being refined sugar deprived after being a heavy consumer all my life was immediate. Within a month I had lost five kilos. My fifteen minute walk extended to thirty five minutes and a year later I joined my local gym. This was totally out of my comfort zone. Three times I drove to the gym and just sat in my car, but a goal was achieved. Next day, go inside the gym, next day walk on the treadmill. I got comfortable with being uncomfortable. I wasn’t in a race with anyone. I was setting my own goals around exercise and nutrition, and achieving them at my own pace. I felt so empowered that almost two years on and 47kg down, I haven’t looked back.
No special diet, pills or surgery. There were no miracles here. I discovered you can’t get fit from special teas or waist trainers alone. Just research into nutrition and a change in lifestyle habits set me on my journey to inspiring myself and others. There’s no ending to my story, this novel has just begun. I still have nutrition and fitness challenges ahead, but I’m happy to be on this journey as the gains don’t just revolve around the gym or my dinner plate; they have filtered through into every aspect of my life.
My aim is not to look like a fitness model or be a professional athlete, but to look and feel like the best me possible. Don’t wait until you’ve reached your goal to be proud of yourself, be proud of every step you take towards reaching that goal.
I did it for me. Do it for you. We are the CEOs of our lives.
